Ogbono seeds are processed from the fruit of Ogbono tree botanically known as Irvingia and commonly called African Bush mango because the edible fruit resemble mango. Ogbono seeds are found inside the core of Bush Mango fruit. They are subtly aromatic nuts typically sun dried for preservation and sold whole or ground. Their high content of mucilage makes them great thickening agents for dishes such as Ogbono soup.

Ogbono seeds also known African mango or bush mango is commonly found in west Africa particularly Nigeria. The edible fruits resemble mango but it is most valued for its seed, the popular Ogbono seed used in making the commonly accepted draw soup especially in the eastern part of Nigeria. It is called draw soup because of its slippery and highly viscous nature. Preference on consumption of Ogbono soup varies, while some like it plain with no added vegetables, others prefer it with vegetables added.
DIRECTION FOR USE:
Ingredients for making Ogbono soup; Meat (Chicken, Turkey or Beef), fish (Mackerel, Titus), stockfish, dry fish, palm oil, onions, pepper, crayfish, seasoning vegetables (Bitter leaf, Uziza leaf, Pumpkin leaf) and salt.
Method:
(1) Boil your meat or fish and set aside.
(2) Grind Ogbono seeds until very fine.
(3) Into preheated red oil, add sliced onion and allow to cook for a few seconds.
(4) Lower the heat before adding ground Ogbono to the hot oil to dissolve it.
(5) Immediately add your meat or fish stock, water, blended crayfish, pepper and seasoning.
(6) Allow to cook for a few more minutes, add more water if too thick, stir very well and add your vegetables, allow to cook for a few seconds and your Ogbonoi soup is ready.
Ogbono soup can be served with pounded yam, wheat, garri or fufu.
